コロナを経て来日したのが1年前でした。

Introduction

Working in a foreign country, particularly one with a distinct work culture like Japan, can be a new experience. As an employee in the Japanese workforce, I gained valuable insights into the country's work practices, communication styles, and technical expertise. In this blog, I will share my observations and reflections on working in Japan, highlighting both the fascinating aspects and the challenges faced as a foreigner.

Japanese Work Culture

Japanese work culture places great emphasis on clear and precise communication.
Technical documentation and specifications are meticulously detailed, ensuring thoroughness in project execution. Punctuality is highly valued, with arriving on time for meetings and project deadlines being crucial.

Communication Styles

Japanese communication tends to be more indirect, where politeness and avoiding
direct confrontation are key. In contrast, Indian communication can be more direct and expressive, with a higher tolerance for disagreements and debates. Adapting to this cultural difference was a learning experience, requiring patience and understanding.

Global Presence and IT Industry

While many Japanese IT companies primarily serve domestic clients, larger corporations have expanded globally,catering to international clients. On the other hand, Indian IT companies have a widespread global presence, with delivery centers and offices in various locations worldwide. Agile development methodologies are prevalent in both countries, promoting flexibility and adaptability in project execution.

My experience working in the East involved exposure to diverse projects and technologies. While Java and Python are widely used in India, I had the opportunity to work with ASP.NET ,C#, JavaScript, and different frameworks in various projects.
Being involved in multiple phases of a project, including testing, development, and design, provided me with a holistic understanding of project requirements.

Learning and Growth Opportunities

Working as a foreigner and a fresher in Japan introduced me to new concepts and practices.
The kindness and helpfulness of my colleagues allowed me to learn and adapt quickly.
I was pleasantly surprised by the high skill level of the engineers, particularly their coding proficiency, which inspired me to enhance my technical skills.

Fascinating Aspects of Japan

As a foreigner, I found several aspects of Japan fascinating. The organized public transportation system made
commuting convenient, and the cleanliness of most places was impressive.
Japan's adherence to rules and regulations created a well-organized and structured environment. Additionally, the importance given to personal space was notable. Exploring beautiful destinations during spring and autumn was a delightful experience.

Challenges Faced

While working in Japan, I encountered certain difficulties.
The heavy reliance on paperwork and the language barrier posed challenges, especially when dealing with administrative tasks like banking. Additionally, Japan's climate, characterized by extreme temperature variations and high humidity, required adjustment, even for someone from a hot country like India.

Conclusion

Working in Japan provided me with valuable insights and experiences, both personally and professionally.
Embracing the differences in work culture and communication styles allowed me to broaden my perspectives.
The exposure to diverse projects and the opportunity to learn new languages and technologies were instrumental in my growth as an employee. Despite the challenges faced, the overall experience was rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked in Japan.
